Together for equality between women and men!
A milestone event in the history of the women’s rights movement in Algeria.

Announce of the meetingOne hundred and thirty people, 60% under the age of thirty (56 girls and 21 boys), from 16 wilayas met at Hotel d’el Biar in Alger 7-8 December 2012.

The event was organized by ten women’s associations: AFAD, AFEPEC, CIDDEF, DJAZAIROUNA, FAM, FARD, FEC, RACHDA-Tebessa, SOS Femmes en Détresse, Tharwa Fadhma N’Soumer, and was coordinated by the Mediterranean Women's Fund (MWF) with the support of UN Women Algeria and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation in Algeria.
The event provided an opportunity for 46 associations working on issues related to women, youth, children, citizenship, ecology, human rights, and cultural development to meet, discuss, and prepare together a road map for equality.

Six workshops addressed issues regarding the organization and autonomy of associations, strategic choices, relations between generations and succession.
Passionate debates reaffirmed the urgent need for change in relations between men and women in Algeria, the need to open the movement to everyone interested in the question of equality without overlooking the necessary stage of confrontation between generations, to reach a point where dialogue and recognition of the importance of collective action becomes possible.

About thirty proposals were adopted by the assembly, among which, in order of priority, was to create a network between the associations present, hold a youth meeting and trainings in equality, and organize a festival for equality.

This event was the fruit of a year-long process during which the ten women’s associations organizing the occasion first discussed and analyzed their activities and programs implemented over the past twenty years. At the end of this period of reflection, they published a summary document entitled, “The march towards equality. Self-analysis of women’s associations. Dynamics and perspectives”.
This moving and joyous event represents a historic step in the consolidation and broadening of the movement for equality between women and men in Algeria.
